Spicing Up Our Dinner - Ranch Buffalo Shredded Chicken Recipe

Pumpkin LOVES spicy foods!  If you give her a choice for dinner, she is likely to pick buffalo wings. While I enjoy wings as much as the next person, I don't love that they are fried, and more skin than actual chicken.  I was searching for an easier and healthier way to serve her wings and I thought that there must be a way to make them in the slow cooker.   That is when I found this recipe on allrecipes.com.

Chicken, wing sauce, butter, and Hidden Valley Ranch - Can it get any easier?

This is now a family favorite in our house!  Everyone loves the combination of buffalo sauce and Hidden Valley Ranch dressing.  We've used bottled ranch as well as the seasoning packets, and love the way it turns out every time!

A Wake Up Call

This morning I went in to wake up my sweet Pumpkin so that she could get ready for school.  She was awake, but lying peacefully in her bed.  I sat next to her, rubbed her back, and whispered, "Good morning Sunshine!"

She looked at me, smiled the faintest smile, and said,  "What day is it?"

"Monday October 27, 2014" was my response.

"I wish it wasn't a Monday.  I just want to stay here in bed for a while."

I gave her a kiss on her forehead and said, "Mondays are tough.  What exciting things do you have on your schedule today?"

She talked a bit about which specials she has, an upcoming test, and getting ready for Halloween.  After a few minutes, she was ready to get up and start her day.

Walking from her room into the kitchen to begin breakfast making, lunch packing, etc.  I got a little teary eyed.  I missed a last.  I remember when every morning I would wake to the sound of one of my munchkins chatting happily, crying, or shouting "Mama!"  Each day, I would wish I could sleep just a little bit longer, wanting "to stay here in bed for a while".  Times have changed.  Roles have reversed. While I love and am proud of my girls and how much they've grown, I sometimes wish I could slow them down just a little bit.

Do You Hear What I Hear? - Train's Bulletproof Picasso

The weather is changing.  It feels like fall outside.  I've had to trade in my shorts and tank tops for jeans and sweaters.  With the new season comes new activities, new moods, and new experiences.  All of the music that we listened to on the boat or at the beach just doesn't seem appropriate for soccer practice, homework, "fall" cleaning, and running 5Ks.  Rather than listen to "feel good" music, I'm now in the mood for something with a bit more substance.

Train has brought that substance in the Bulletproof Picasso album that will be released today, September 16, 2014.  Overall, an upbeat album with deeper emotional feeling than some our favorite summer songs, Bulletproof Picasso has songs that I can listen to on repeat.   To get a glimpse of the style and tone of the songs, take a listen to the title track, Bulletproof Picasso:

While I love the song, Bulletproof Picasso, the album is filled with even more songs that I can connect with on some level.   Don't Grow Up So Fast is a beautiful slower song that makes me think of my children and their race to be "older" than they already are.   Wonder What You're Doing For The Rest of Your Life is a very peppy pop-style song.  It is the kind of song I can dance to in my kitchen with the kiddos on dance-party evenings. In fact, I don't know that I could pick a song that I didn't enjoy on this album.

If you have previously enjoyed other songs by Train, like Hey Soul Sister,  Drops of Jupiter, and Drive By, then I am pretty confident that you'll love this new album too.

If you want to order this album, head over to iTunes or Amazon.  (At the time of this posting it looks like the price is $7.99 at iTunes and $9.99 on Amazon.)

The Little Things

Sometimes it is the littlest things that make me happy.  When I was recently visiting my parents, my mom gave me this box of candy because she saw it and thought of me.  I'd never had it before.  It was good, but what made it even better was knowing that I was on someone's mind for no special reason.

So, if someone is on your mind today, let them know.  You don't have to find a candy that has their name in it.  Just send a text, write a letter, make a phone call, or do something else that you know will make them smile.

Happy Monday!

Back to School with Mabel's Labels

Peanut and Pumpkin returned to school last week.  The return of school means the return of after school activities.  From soccer and running club to piano and guitar, we are now on the run!  I don't know about you, but for us, times of transition tend to result in more items lost and forgotten.

What can you do about all of these items that end up misplaced, left behind, or borrowed and accidentally taken home by the wrong person?  We used to just write them off as a loss.  No one knew who the pencil/shoe/lunchbox/sweatshirt belonged to, so people would take it with the best of intentions of finding the rightful owner.  More often than not, it wouldn't happen.  Even when an item ends up in the lost and found at school, it is rare for the owner to return to claim it.  Often, they'll check when they first lose it, and it won't be there yet.  Once it is returned, the child will have forgotten, gotten a replacement, or just got caught up in the craziness of life and neglect to check again.

The best way to make sure you get your items back is to have them clearly labeled with your name. A lost item with an unknown owner will result in minimal effort in creating a happy reunion.  People are just too busy to search long and hard, especially when there isn't really a huge benefit for them. However, if someone knows who something belongs to, the effort required is minimal to return it safely home. We used to just use a Sharpie to label our important items.  Unfortunately, Sharpie wears off.  It does it so subtly that you don't even realize that your label is unreadable until it is too late.  I knew there had to be a better way, but I was too busy to figure out what it was.

Then, several years ago, we discovered Mabel's Labels.  My grandmother was in a nursing home and many of her items seemed to disappear from her room or wouldn't come back from the laundry.  We looked online and found that Mabel's Labels makes Tag Mates labels.  Tag Mates are sticky labels for clothing. No ironing required!  We ordered some and loved them so much that we started to think about using them for school items as well.

Mabel's Labels has labels for just about anything you'd want to keep track of.  You can buy items individually (if you only need shoe labels, for example), or you can buy them in bundles.  Personally, I love the Tween Pack and the Stylish Scholars Combo.  The Stylish Scholars Combo has over 100 labels in various sizes and shapes that are most practical for labeling your every day school items.  The designs are attractive and fun, and would work for any age.  We ordered a Stylish Scholars Combo with our last name so that the girls could share one pack.  There are more than enough labels for them to share, and we still have some for items that need to be labeled throughout the year.  We may even have enough for next year.  The Tween Pack only has 25 labels, but they are so much fun, that they make a great back to school gift for your child that wants to express his/her unique personality with their labels.   We ordered a Tween Pack a couple years ago.  Because these labels are so unique, the girls use them sparingly.   They place these labels on items like a binder that will be used all year, and can be used again in the future.   Items like pencils or pens get a Skinny Mini label from the Stylish Scholars Combo.

Since we've started using Mabel's Labels, I'm buying fewer replacement items for Peanut and Pumpkin. I think they may end up paying for themselves over the course of a school year.  (I know they did last year!) They also definitely decrease our stress over misplaced and stolen items.  We love our Mabel's Labels for keeping track of all our stuff!

*I was sent a Stylish Scholars Combo in exchange for my honest review.  I was not compensated in any other way.  All thoughts and opinions are mine.

Back to School Blues (and Hopes)

Today is a day I've been both looking forward to and dreading at the same time.  It is the first day of school for Peanut and Pumpkin.

I am sitting here feeling a bit morose, yet hopeful.  I miss my girls - my reading buddies, my house cleaning helpers, my background musicians, my constant sources of surprise and amusement.  I miss our amazing and sometimes profound conversations.  I love our time together where we can create our own schedule, rules, and fun.  I already miss the random hugs throughout the day for no reason at all.  I miss listening to them play together (even when they argue).  I even miss the constant interruptions when I'm trying to get something done.  (I feel like I should probably accomplish more when they are back at school, but somehow, I don't.)

While there is so much that I miss when my girls are at school, I send them because I have hope.  I hope that they will learn more than I would be able to teach them. I hope that they will develop friendships that will help them through the difficult tween/teen years. I hope to expose them to people that are different than they are.  I want my children to be kind, compassionate, and open-minded.  I hope that school provides them with unique perspectives so that they can make well informed decisions about what they think, feel and believe.  I hope that they will find their voices, their passions, their paths in life that will make them the most content.

Avoiding Summer Slide (And Beyond) - #3 Financial Awareness

Several summers ago, when I was growing tired of Peanut and Pumpkin asking me for snacks, treats, etc every time we went into a store or past an ice cream shop, I decided that I needed to give my kids more financial responsibility.  I was tired of saying "No", but I certainly wasn't about to start saying "Yes" to all of these extravagances.  I took several steps to increase their financial awareness.

1)  More responsibility at home.
My girls have been doing chores since they were tiny.  Before they could even speak in complete sentences I would have them find all of the socks in the laundry.  That was their only job - find socks. Then we moved on to finding socks and matching them.  Eventually they found, matched, folded and put socks away in the appropriate drawers.  Now they can pretty much do their own laundry from start to finish.  While we prefer to do it all together - we've had some amazing conversations over the laundry basket - the girls can handle it if I ask them to do it.   This is just one of their "required" chores. Just as no one pays me to cook dinner or drive the girls to practices and events, Peanut and Pumpkin do not get paid for required chores.  (Each year I reevaluate what the girls are capable of doing and modify their chore list.  During the summer they are able to do more than they are during the school year.)

2)  An opportunity to earn their own money.
While the girls don't get paid for required chores like laundry, wiping down the bathroom sink, sweeping and vacuuming the kitchen floor (essentially cleaning up after themselves), they do have the opportunity to earn money by doing other chores.  The paid chores are listed in the kitchen pantry with the job, the frequency with which it can be done, and the pay rate.   If Peanut and/or Pumpkin are saving up for something, if they are bored, or if they just want to earn a little spending money, they can look at the list and choose something to do.  (FYI - My pay rate is pretty low.  The girls don't really need an overabundance of spending money.  If they have too much, then they don't really have to think too hard before making financial decisions.)

3)  Keeping track of their money.
Since the girls are earning money, I think it is also important for them to keep track of it.  Peanut and Pumpkin have a checkbook that has a record of the money they've earned and the money they've spent. When they earn money by doing a chore, they add it to their checkbook (which I keep in my purse). This works well for us for a couple reasons.  1 - I don't always have to have cash to pay them for their chores.  2 - They are learning to balance a checkbook.

4) Making their own financial decisions.
Now, when the girls ask for some item that I think is silly or frivolous, I don't have to say "No".  I simply tell them that they can buy it if they have enough money in their checkbook and decide that they want to.  The change in their desire to spend money is amazing.  They are so much more aware of how much things cost.   For example, Peanut loves ICEEs.  Every time we would see a place that sells ICEEs she would ask to buy one.  Now, she asks how much it costs.  Before, she didn't realize that the same item can vary in price from $6.00 at a theme park, to $3.00 at the mall, to just over $1.00 at Sam's Club. This new appreciation for the value of products is refreshing.   I've found that both girls check prices even when we're shopping for items that they need and know that I intend to buy for them.

So far, these four steps have worked really well to make Peanut and Pumpkin more financially aware and more financially responsible.  Do you have any tips that you use with your kids?

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom

This past weekend, a couple dear friends of mine lost someone that was very special to them.  As they go through this difficult time, I am reminded of the amazing people in my life that I was blessed to know and heartbroken to lose.  While it is true that the sadness and pain do seem to lessen with time, it is also true that it can sneak up on you again at any moment without notice.

Missing someone isn't about how long it's been since you've seen them last or the amount of time since you've talked. It's about that very moment when you're doing something, and you wish that they were right there with you.

Avoiding Summer Slide - Tips & Suggestions (#2 Reading Together)

I divide all readers into two classes; those who read to remember and those who read to forget.

–William Lyon Phelps

I love to read!  Historical Fiction, Romance, Mystery, Suspense, True Crime, Nonfiction - I read them all.  More often than not, I am a read to forget kind of girl, however I do occasionally read to remember. I have found that I can learn quite a bit about myself, others, and the world in general by reading a good book.  Because I have an appreciation for the knowledge and escape that comes from reading, I have always had a desire to pass that on to my children.

From the first day that I brought my babies home from the hospital, we have read together.  While some people thought that it was a bit extreme to read with my girls at such a young age, I have never regretted it.  Though the girls are now 8 & 10, and can (and do) read just as easily on their own, we still read together almost every day.

Researchers have studied the benefits of reading with children, and I have yet to hear of one that doesn't recommend it.  However, experience has given me my own list of reasons why we love to read together:

1)  Vocabulary - It is very rare for Peanut or Pumpkin to come across a word that they don't recognize or can't figure out with context clues.  Occasionally, if they're feeling lazy, they'll ask what a word means, but usually they read ahead a bit or reread a sentence to figure out what it means on their own.  By reading books by authors from other countries, classic books that are written using terminology from a previous generation, and books and may be a bit older than their reading level, they are exposed to words, sentences, and phrases that make them think.

2)  Bonding - When we read together at home, the girls and I squish into our chair and a half, cuddle up with a blanket, and relax.  It is one of my favorite places to be.  While the girls still love hugs and are very affectionate, our reading/cuddle time is reminiscent of when they were babies and we'd sit cuddled together for hours at a time.  It is comfort!

3)  Conversation - Reading together gives us something to talk about.  We can talk about the book, or even topics that the book brings up.  I feel that serious topics, like death, drugs, poverty, etc., are a bit easier to discuss when they are relevant only in a book and not necessarily in their real lives yet.  Books open the door to discussions that need to take place.

Do you read together with your kids?  What benefits have you found?

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom

Another Wednesday means it is time for another quote.  Here's the latest food for thought:
"The most influential of all educational factors is the conversation in a child's home." -William Temple
While many would like to blame the schools and the government for the state of education in our city, state, and country (and they certainly aren't blameless), we must also look to ourselves for some of the failures that we see.  Personally, I think that what we teach our children at home is most influential in determining what they believe and are able to achieve.

*Credit for quotes may be incorrect, but regardless of who said them, I like them.

Avoiding Summer Slide - Tips & Suggestions (#1 Khan Academy)

I LOVE summer break!

From the beach to boat trips to lazy pajama days, there is so much that makes me happy about the summer.

I like to be able to take my girls out to experience life.  I want them to have amazing memories from their childhood.  When they look back on their lives as they get older, I want them to smile - not because they remember the things they had, but because they remember their feelings and experiences.

While there are so many fun things for kids (and adults) to do when they're on break, that doesn't mean that responsibilities can be completely neglected.   This is especially true if you're trying to avoid the dreaded summer slide.

I consider myself to be quite fortunate.  My girls are bright.  Even if they do experience a bit of summer slide, they are able to quickly recover.  Last summer, I made sure that Peanut and Pumpkin both read, but other than that, I didn't really worry too much about their "schooling" during the summer.  This year, I tried to create a schedule that would allow them to work on more than just reading during these fun-filled summer months.

Have you heard of Khan Academy?
Khan Academy is an organization on a mission. We're a not-for-profit with the goal of changing education for the better by providing a free world-class education for anyone anywhere.
All of the site's resources are available to anyone. It doesn't matter if you are a student, teacher, home-schooler, principal, adult returning to the classroom after 20 years, or a friendly alien just trying to get a leg up in earthly biology. Khan Academy's materials and resources are available to you completely free of charge.
I had an amazing friend tell me about Khan Academy last year.  This summer, I decided to sign my girls up and have them work on their math skills (though there are many other subjects to choose from as well).  Peanut and Pumpkin spend 1/2 hour each weekday morning practicing skills that they have previously learned as well as learning new skills.  The curriculum includes questions/problems to solve, hints, and even videos explaining topics that might be new to you or your children.   Generally, the girls can practice on their own while I am getting other things done around the house.  Only occasionally do they have a question that one of the videos or hints doesn't answer for them.

One of my favorite things about Khan Academy (other than the fact that it is completely FREE!) is that they send me a weekly update telling me how much time my kids have spent on the site.  They also send a breakdown of the skills they are working on, having trouble with, and have mastered.   Another bonus - my kids enjoy doing it!  :)

While I can't say exactly the impact that Khan Academy has had on my girls' success in school, I do have to say that it does seem to be a wonderful program.  I have recommended it to all of my friends and family with children (and may actually brush up on my own math skills this fall).   I'd be interested to hear your opinions as well.

I have a few more tips and suggestions that I'll be sharing in future posts.  Do you have any other ideas or sites that have been helpful for your family in preventing summer slide?

Wednesday's Words of Wisdom

I love looking up fun and inspirational quotes to suit my mood.  Today I happened upon this one and thought it was highly appropriate as we get ever closer to our first day back at school.

"The difference between school and life? In school, you're taught a lesson and then given a test. In life, you're given a test that teaches you a lesson."- Tom Bodett

Perhaps we need to change how we teach our children, since it seems like life lessons are always a bit easier to remember long term than typical school lessons.

*I don't really know if Tom Bodett said this, but no matter who did, I like it.  :)

Box Tops for Education - Receipts Promotion

I am a HUGE fan of Box Tops for Education (except for the days when I have to sort, count, and send them in).  I am always asking friends, family, neighbors, and anyone that will listen for their Box Tops if they aren't going to use them.

Every Box Top is worth $0.10 to your school!  While a dime might not seem like much, it really adds up if you can get the entire school paying attention and clipping instead of tossing those tiny pieces of plastic, paper, cardboard, etc.

My favorite thing about the Box Tops for Education program is that they actually send a check directly to your school!  You don't have to save up points for items that you may or may not need.  Your school gets money that can be used for just about anything.

While the Box Tops themselves add up fairly quickly, I love when BTFE offers promotions that allow you to earn bonus Box Tops.   Here's a great one that is going on right now:

For every 10 participating Box Tops for Education™ Receipt Rewards products you purchase in a single transaction between 7/21/14 and 8/31/14 at a participating grocery retailer, you can earn 50 bonus eBoxTops™ for your selected school. By 10/1/14 either upload a picture of your receipt to BTFE.com/receipts, or email or text a picture of your receipt to submit@btfereceips.com. A star must be placed next to the date of purchase, the UPC codes for all 10 participating products and the total amount of your receipt transaction, and each starred item must be legible in the photo. After your receipt has been validated, you will receive a reply email or text with a unique code. enter the code at www.BTFE.com/redeem by 12/1/14. All eBoxTops will be awarded directly to the selected school. Only BTFE registered schools can redeem eBoxTops. Each eBoxTops credit is worth 10 cents to the redeeming school. All eBoxTops are subject to the Official Rules available at www.boxtops4education.com. Limit 10 participating BTFE products per transaction. Limit 5 receipts per phone number or email address. Msg & data rates may apply. Must be 18+ to send text. Subject to General Mills privacy policy at www.BTFE.com.

I'll be heading out to the store this week to pick up my 10 BTFE items (we're almost out of cereal anyway) and my bonus $5.00 for my kids' school.

Back to School and Back to Blogging

I don't know how some of my amazing blogger friends do it.  They have wonderful blogs full of quality content that people love to read.  When I started blogging, I had high hopes that I would be able to do the same.  Over the years, however, I've discovered that I'm not a great blogger.  I take long breaks, my grammar isn't perfect, and I don't have much focus.   With that knowledge, I have decided to change my purpose for this blog.  I don't think I'll ever be able to use it to make any extra money, so I will use it for something else.

Most of my life is focused on the education of my children, so I will focus my blog on the same.  I am highly interested in the direction that education is going (and perhaps trying to change the course a bit). So, I'll write about the changes I see and share articles that others write as well.  I'd love to hear your opinions on the changes I'm seeing.  If I have a question, I'd be very interested to receive advice from people that have already experienced the same issues.  I'll also happily share my experiences with you.  I have always enjoyed finding freebies for my kids' school and their classroom teachers, so I'll share that information as I happen across it.   Hopefully you will find it to be useful.

I'll still write the occasional review and offer giveaways as the opportunity arises.  So, if you hear of a product that you think is a great fit, please let me know.

Looking forward to the journey ahead!

David Gray - Mutineers

I have recently found myself rediscovering my love of music after years of listening to only children's songs.  Now that my kids are a bit older, I have more freedom in selecting music that we all may enjoy. I tend to choose artists that are a bit soulful, and aren't as well known as the most popular musicians. Some of my favorites are - The Head and The Heart,  The Avett Brothers, Brandi Carlile, and now David Gray.

David Gray is the kind of artist that plays songs you can listen to on a mellow rainy day and they seem to fit in just perfectly.   They are great songs for sitting around a fire on a cool summer night while chatting with friends.  They make great background music, as they aren't too distracting.  However, many of the songs also have enough pep that they work to keep me cleaning on a housework day.

My favorite song from the album Mutineers, is the first song - Back in the World.   See what you think:

Here is more information about David Gray, Mutineers, and the upcoming tour:
David Gray has announced the upcoming release of a new album, Mutineers. The record is Gray’s tenth studio album and his first in four years. To mark the news, Gray has unveiled the video for ‘Gulls’, the first track from Mutineers to be streamed ahead of release.
To coincide with Mutineers, Gray will tour the UK for the first time in three years. The headline tour, commencing at Birmingham’s Symphony Hall on June 23 will include a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall on June 24. The dates follow a run of sold-out US shows across April and May and three sold-out intimate shows earlier this year at Westminster’s Emmanuel Centre. Additional US tour dates will be announced in May.
Recorded in Church Studios, London and produced by Andy Barlow (Lamb), whose brief was to not let Gray “make the same record I’ve made before.” The result is an album that seems to fizz with the joy of its own assembly and finds Gray steering into unfamiliar territory while cultivating a pugnacious but respectful relationship with his own history. “I know I’ve done something here that has an authority that is inspiring me and I don’t have to worry about my past or any of that. The lovely thing about this is we’ve had the time to experiment, and it’s been wonderful,” says Gray.
David Gray captured the world’s attention with his breakout multi-platinum hit White Ladder, the first of three No.1 UK albums, earning him both Brit and Grammy nominations. He has continued to build on this success, with recent albums Draw The Line (2009) and Foundling (2010), both reaching the Billboard Top 10 in the US.

17 Reasons I'm Lucky - Day 17

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, and simply because I'm feeling blessed lately, I've decided to do 17 days of posts.  Each post will include one reason that I feel lucky.  Hopefully, you can think of at least 17 reasons why you're lucky too.  Please feel free to share your reasons, because sometimes it just feels nice to be able to brag a bit.

May the luck of the Irish be with you this March, and beyond.

This series of posts has truly made me realize just how lucky I really am.  When I was trying to decide what to write about for my final day, I was both thrilled and frustrated that it was so difficult.  How do you decide on one reason you're lucky when there are just so many to choose from?  After much thought, I finally picked one final reason that I'm such a lucky girl.  This one reason is like an umbrella that captures so many of the other little things.  I am lucky to LOVE and to be LOVED!
Doc loves me and our girls with all his heart.  When he looks at me, I can see his love in his eyes.   I can hear his love in the kind words he says.  I can feel his love in his touch.  Even when he is sitting silently reading, I can sense his love in his calm contentment.  Every action is done with love.  How lucky am I to be surrounded by it?  How lucky am I to be the one to be able to give him my love in return?
Peanut and Pumpkin are love.  They see love in all that is around them.  They experience love in everything that they do.  Their smiles and laughs show all the love that is in their hearts.  When I am feeling blue, a hug from my girls always feels so genuine and full of love, that I can't help but feel better.  Our girls aren't perfect.  They have tantrums, meltdowns, and bouts of unexplainable bad behavior, but they never last long.  Just the other day, after dealing with a bad attitude, followed by silence for about 10 minutes, I was given an unsolicited apology and a hug.  It appears (so far), that in the battle between anger and love, love always wins out with our girls.
A quote I've often heard about friendship, is also aptly applied to love.  "Love isn't a big thing, it is a million little things."  For each of those million things, I'm lucky and very appreciative.

17 Reasons I'm Lucky - Day 16

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, and simply because I'm feeling blessed lately, I've decided to do 17 days of posts.  Each post will include one reason that I feel lucky.  Hopefully, you can think of at least 17 reasons why you're lucky too.  Please feel free to share your reasons, because sometimes it just feels nice to be able to brag a bit.

May the luck of the Irish be with you this March, and beyond.

I'm lucky to have known my grandparents.
I have one grandmother that is still alive and doing very well.  She quilts (She's the one that taught me how to quilt.), tells funny stories, and is even on Facebook.  She loves to hear Peanut and Pumpkin play music.  She's set in her ways, and a bit opinionated, but she is also very loving and accepting.  She may not agree with me, but she will always love me.  (It doesn't hurt that I bring her chocolate when I visit.) :-)  Grandma used to take us to pick berries when when we were young.  I remember soaking the raspberries in water to get those tiny black bugs to float out of them.  Grandma always made strawberry jam and blueberry cake with the goodies we picked.  Now, she has us pick them and she still does the "making".

While I only have the one grandmother that is still with us, I was very fortunate to be able to know and love my other grandparents as well.  I have amazing memories of each and every one of them.

Grandpa loved to tease.  He'd chase you around with pliers if you had a loose tooth.  He would get lost on every road trip, but you'd never hear him curse.  He even let us drive his truck through the woods on his farm when we were learning.  He simply sat next to us and laughed.  Even though he would tease, he was also very loving too.  He often came to watch me play sports.  Also, when we were very young he would buy us small pieces of candy when we came to visit.  Grandpa was hard working, but always smiling.  When I close my eyes and think about him, I can still hear his laugh.

My other grandparents were definitely more quiet.  We could sit and watch TV together for hours.  Grandpa loved old westerns.  I remember racing to be the first to give him a hug when we'd go to visit.  I couldn't wait to hear him say, "Hola Mija" as he wrapped his arms around me.  He had a stern face and a kind heart.  He worked hard his whole life and was willing to give anyone a helping hand.  A man of few words, the words he did say were always very important. A simple "Mija" was all I ever needed to know he loved me.  I'll always feel blessed and lucky to have heard that on our final visit.

Grandma was an amazing cook.  When I think of comfort food, I think of the foods she made for us.  Her potato salad was the only one I'd ever eat.  She made the most amazing rice.  I watched her make it, had her teach me to make it, and have tried for years to perfect it, but I've never even gotten close.  In the middle of the summer in her hot house, she'd stand over the stove making tortillas for us all, because that is the easiest way she knew to show her love.  When we'd go to leave, she'd sneak us a few to take home, since she knew we loved them so much.  Grandma was short, beautiful, and very glamorous.  She loved sequin.  While I don't wear much sequin myself, my girls have a penchant for it.  Every time I see them in a sequin top or shoes, I think of grandma and smile.

17 Reasons I'm Lucky - Day 15

In honor of St. Patrick's Day, and simply because I'm feeling blessed lately, I've decided to do 17 days of posts.  Each post will include one reason that I feel lucky.  Hopefully, you can think of at least 17 reasons why you're lucky too.  Please feel free to share your reasons, because sometimes it just feels nice to be able to brag a bit.

I'm lucky to be able to dance!
I don't dance in public often, and I don't dance well, but dancing around the house is definitely one of my specialties.  I like to dance while I'm vacuuming.  I like to dance while I'm cooking dinner or doing the dishes. Dancing just makes life more fun.  When I dance silly, the kids join in.  When a romantic song is on the radio, Doc will wrap his arms around me and we'll slow dance.
My three dance partners are the best around - even if we don't have great rhythm - and that makes me very lucky!

17 Reasons I'm Lucky - Day 14

I'm lucky to have neighbors that have a dog.
Peanut and Pumpkin want a dog.  Doc does not.  In our house, majority doesn't rule.  Since Doc and I like to travel, a dog just doesn't really fit into our lifestyle.
Fortunately, our neighbors have a dog.  Actually, they have two.  Their dogs are like our girls' dogs.  The girls help feed them, brush them, take them for walks, and just cuddle with them when they are around.  Peanut and Pumpkin can get their "dog fix" without the long term responsibility.  How lucky is that?!

I'm lucky to be able to volunteer at the school.
My kids are not at home for almost 8 hours every day.  I trust teachers and other responsible adults to help them to learn, care for them, and keep them safe.  While I generally believe that these adults have their best interest at heart, I still like to know what my kids are doing during the day.  I want to know who they're friends with.  I want to know that they are happy.  I want to know that they feel safe.  By volunteering at the school, I am able to get a small glimpse of what they do and how they interact during the part of the day when I can't be with them.

I'm lucky to have the freedom that I have.
I didn't post this on the 12th.  I didn't have to.  I am free to post or not post.  I am free to stay home with my children when they have a snow day.  I am free to make cookies with my girls, teach them how to play Battleship, and read Harry Potter.  While I do have responsibilities, I am free to make many decisions in my life.  There are many reasons that I have the freedom I do.  There are many people to thank.  I'm very lucky to be surrounded by the people I am.

My husband is kind, patient, and thoughtful.
I am sometimes a bit emotional.  Yesterday was one of those times. After a long and difficult day, I was emotional and a little irrational, but Doc was kind and patient.  Even though there were a thousand other things he needed to do, he took time out last night to relax and watch a chick flick with me because he knew I needed him.  His thoughtfulness makes me a very lucky girl!

I don't know if it makes me lucky, or dishonest, but my kids think that you're supposed to eat apple slices while watching a movie.  :)
From the time my kids were small, I've always given them apple slices when we sit down to watch a movie at home.  Apples are crunchy, yummy, and healthy, so they seem like a perfect fit.  It wasn't until friends were over that I realized how unique it was that my kids asked if they could have apples and watch a movie.  Their friends looked at them like they were crazy when they asked, but were happy to join in the apple crunching goodness themselves.
Customs, habits, and traditions are easy to modify, eliminate or create when you have children.  They only know what they're taught, so I think I'm pretty lucky to have children that have so readily accepted some healthier habits.

I'm lucky because my children are also good friends.
When I found out that I was pregnant with Pumpkin, Peanut was only about 8 or 9 months old.  While I would have been happy with a boy or a girl, I have to admit that I was secretly hoping that she would be a girl.  I wanted Peanut to have a sister, and a best friend because I was fortunate enough to experience that myself with my amazing sister.  As of this moment right now, my girls are best friends.  Even though they do fight, they love each other.  They look out for each other.  They enjoy being together. (They don't even like to sleep in separate rooms.)  I fully expect them to experience some difficulties as they get older, but at the end of the day, I hope they find a way to remain friends.  That would make us all very lucky!

I'm lucky that my parents encouraged my love of reading when I was young.
I love a good book.  Mystery, Romance, Historical Fiction, Nonfiction - I enjoy just about any genre.  A good book can be a great escape when actual travel isn't possible.  It gives the reader the opportunity to get inside the head of another character.  It allows the reader to develop a new appreciation for all that he/she has.  A book can provide inspiration, creativity, and ideas for getting the most out of your own life.
I may not remember every detail of every book I've ever read, but I do know how books have made me feel.  The ability to read allows you to travel anywhere and do just about anything - between the pages of a book.

I'm lucky to have a couple AMAZING friends.
Good friends are kind, thoughtful, helpful, reliable, funny, honest, trustworthy and very hard to find.  I guess that makes me extra lucky since I have more than one.  We don't agree on everything, but we have a respect for each other that allows us to disagree, but never judge.

Tis the privilege of friendship to talk nonsense, and to have her nonsense respected.  --Charles Lamb

I'm lucky to live in a place that people enjoy visiting when they are on vacation.

Amazing sunsets are a regular view for me and my family.  I can fall asleep to the sounds of birds singing and waves rolling onto the shore all summer long.  We are surrounded by solitude, with fun and excitement just a stone's throw away.  Sometimes I wonder if my children realize how lucky they are to live where we do.

I'm lucky to have such supportive family.

My sister lives about 1.5 hours away from us and has two children about the same age as Peanut and Pumpkin.  My parents live 3.5-4 hours away.  My in-laws live nearby, but they've just moved here recently.

My kids are pretty active.  They play soccer, basketball, softball, and musical instruments.  They are always involved in camps, games, programs, and other activities.  I am always amazed and impressed at the number of events our family manages to attend.  In fact, I can't remember an event where there wasn't at least one person other than Doc and I in attendance.  With the girls being in 4th and 2nd grade, the games/programs aren't always overly exciting (particularly for non-parents).  Most of the programs they are involved with are essentially learning leagues.  It doesn't matter to our family.  They come to as many events as possible and cheer our girls on.  My children know that they are loved and supported whether they are the best, the worst, or somewhere in the middle.

Love and Support - That makes me and my girls very lucky!

I'm lucky that my children have kind and thoughtful friends.

For Valentine's Day this year, Pumpkin's teacher had the children each make one card for one classmate.  The children were all assigned a specific "friend" to make a card - to be sure that everyone received one.  The child that was supposed to make Pumpkin's card chose not to, so she didn't get one.  She came home a little upset, but she wasn't devastated.  The next day, she came home with a beautiful handwritten note and picture from one of her friends.  It said, "I'm sorry that you didn't receive a card."

What a kind and thoughtful gesture!  What an amazing little girl! I am so blessed that my children have chosen friends that care about them and are considerate of their feelings.

I'm lucky to have appreciative children.

The other day, after a regular day - nothing too stressful or abnormal happened, I went into my bedroom and found this on my pillow.

The girls had been working on a thank you note for a friend that had given them chocolates for Valentine's Day.  I don't know what inspired them to write a thank you note to me.  (Doc received one as well.)  I can honestly say that it made what was an average day into an outstanding one.  Unsolicited appreciation makes me feel like one lucky mom!

I am lucky because I have amazing parents that love their grandchildren.

Doc and I try to take a mini-vacation every year - just the two of us.  It would be nearly impossible for me to leave the girls for any length of time if I didn't have confidence that they were being loved, cared for, safe, and secure.  My parents never hesitate to take time off work and drive 4 hours to come and stay with Peanut and Pumpkin.   They watch them, take them to do fun things, help them with homework, listen to them play music, and manage all the day to day events for the girls flawlessly (or at least without  major incident).   My parents never ask for anything in return.   How lucky am I?  :)

I'm lucky to be able wake up each morning and go to bed each night with my best friend.

Doc and I met when we were just 18 and 19 years old.  Barely more than children, we fell in love.  Now, at 37 and 38, we are not the same people we were nearly 20 years ago.  We've grown and changed, but luckily, we've done so together.   I sleep best when I sleep on his chest.  Fortunately for me, he doesn't mind that I sometimes drool.  ;)

Carmex Gets Fashionable

Have you seen the new Carmex Moisture Plus lip balms?

They are fancy!

There are four styles to choose from:  Chic, Fab, Whimsical, and Adventurous.

Personally, my favorite is the Whimsical version.  The bright colors and patterns make it easy to find hiding in the bottom of my purse.

My sister, the lover of all things purple, was smitten with the Fab lip balm.   It actually fits her perfectly, since she always looks nothing short of fabulous.  (Did I tell you the story of when someone thought Doc and I were her parents?  FYI - She's my older sister.  Ugh!)

Pumpkin is very fond of animal prints these days, and found the adventurous stick to be right up her alley.  It goes well with her zebra book bag and cheetah bean bag chair.

Peanut ended up with the Chic stick.  Not so much because it was her favorite, but because that is what we had left.  It worked out well, however, since her book bag is black and white as well.  It was a perfect match.

I have to say, that it seemed silly to worry about the color of your lip balm package when I first saw these new sticks.  However, after using them this winter, I have discovered that I absolutely LOVE it.  Now, we don't have to worry that we are using the wrong stick.  With chapped lip season coinciding with cold and flu season, there is no need to take the extra risk of using someone else's Carmex.

In fact, I love these new sticks so much that I actually bought several as gifts for teachers, co-workers, and friends.  They made great stocking stuffers and would have been great for Valentine's gifts for teachers as well.

My only problem with these new lip balms - it seems like they don't have as much lip balm in them.  They've run out of goodness and I've had to buy replacements already.  To be honest though, it may just be the ridiculousness of this winter.  I might be using lip balm even more than I ever have before.

Now that spring is fast approaching (I hope!), maybe Carmex will even come out with some new summer sticks.  I know I'll be on the lookout for them!

*Disclaimer - Carmex sent me samples of this product to facilitate my review.

PS - If you haven't tried the healing lotion and cream from Carmex, you should!  It is hard to find, but definitely worth the effort.   (I've only been able to locate it in CVS.)

Body Issues and Acceptance

This morning, as I was browsing Facebook, I came across this video.   (Warning:  Video contains profanity that is "bleeped", but not that well.)

I was shocked at the range of emotions that it brought up.  I laughed.  I was impressed with her fearlessness.  I thought, "There's no way I'd show my muffin top intentionally!"  I was frightened.  I was inspired.

Here's the thing.  I exercise regularly.  I generally eat healthy foods.  It doesn't matter.  I still have a muffin top.   I keep it tucked away under long shirts whenever possible, but occasionally it does sneak out to be seen.   It isn't something I'm proud of.  It isn't how I'd choose for my body to look.  It is however, my body.   It is something I need to learn to accept and even love - if not for myself, then for my girls.

While I try very hard not to say anything about my body around my girls, I think they can sense my body issues.  Kids are smart.  They don't need me to say anything.   Little actions (or inactions) are all they need to know that I'm not happy with the way I look.  The problem is that I want them to be happy with themselves.   I want them to love their bodies now, when they are teenagers, and when they become adults.  I don't want them to be self-conscious.  I don't want their body images to interfere with their relationships and happiness.  In order for them to have that confidence.  I think I need to develop more of my own.

Obviously, not all of a child's body image comes from her parents.  Kids are exposed to the message that weight loss is important on TV, in movies, on the radio, and just about everywhere else you look.  My girls aren't big TV watchers.  Recently, they've begun watching MeTV on the weekends though.  (They love Leave It To Beaver!)  At the start of the new year, every commercial on MeTV seemed to be about weight loss.  Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, and local gyms advertised during each and every two minute break.   A few weeks ago, Pumpkin asked if she could sign up for Nutrisystem because she needed to lose 15 lbs.

What?!

She's 8.  She's not even close to overweight.  If she lost 15 lbs, she'd probably die.  My heart broke at the thought that she might be even a little serious.

Her comment led to a talk about weight, bodies, shapes, sizes, exercising, and good food choices - all stuff we've talked about before.  She seemed like maybe she was just saying it for shock value. (She's my child that likes to get a reaction from people.)  However, I do worry about her especially.   I'll never forget the day that she came home from 3 year old preschool and said, "Sara (name has been changed) and I are the fat girls in our class."

Again - What?!

She didn't say it with any real emotion.  She said it as if it were fact.  I don't know who told her that, but  obviously someone had.  We had never used the word "fat" in our house.  I wasn't even sure if she knew what it meant.  Ever since that day I've watched her carefully because I knew that a seed had been planted.  One million people can tell her from now until forever that she isn't fat, but if she is anything like me, she will remember the one person that said she was louder and more clearly in her head.

How do you drown out that voice that tells you that you aren't good enough?

I don't know that you can ever really eliminate that voice, but hopefully my girls will be able to at least hear the other voices that are kind, loving and accepting.  With that love and acceptance I hope they develop a desire to take care of themselves with healthy food choices and an active lifestyle.  Then, when they're doing the best they can for themselves and enjoying their lives, I want them to look in the mirror and be proud of who they are.  My girls are beautiful and they always will be, regardless of their sizes, freckles, blemishes, etc.  They each have a big heart, amazing sense of humor, and a mind (and body) that will take them anywhere they want to go!  That is something to be grateful for!
